Fulacht fia, Garraunredmond, Co. Cork

In a marshy field east of a stream in Garraunredmond, a low horseshoe-shaped mound sits in the kind of damp, unremarkable ground that tends to swallow history quietly.

It measures just over ten metres long, a little under a metre high, and opens northward with a gap of four metres across. To the untrained eye it might read as a natural undulation, a slight rise in wet pasture. In fact it is a fulacht fia, one of the most common yet least-visited monument types in the Irish landscape.

A fulacht fia is a Bronze Age cooking or heating site, typically consisting of a trough dug into the ground, a nearby water source, and a mound of fire-cracked stones built up over repeated use. The process involved heating stones in a fire and dropping them into a water-filled trough to bring it to temperature, after which the spent, shattered stones were raked aside and accumulated over time into the distinctive horseshoe shape that survives. The monument at Garraunredmond fits this pattern closely: marshy ground providing ready water, a stream immediately to the west, and the characteristic crescent mound of burnt material still standing to a height of nearly a metre. A second, levelled example of the same type lies roughly forty metres to the south, now largely flattened but recorded as a companion site. The pairing is a reminder that these places were not one-off episodes but features of a repeatedly used, organised landscape.
