Fulacht fia, Garryadeen, Co. Cork

In a pasture at Garryadeen in mid Cork, a low grassy rise barely distinguishable from the surrounding field is just about all that remains of a fulacht fia, a type of prehistoric cooking or processing site found in enormous numbers across Ireland.

These monuments typically consist of a horseshoe-shaped mound of burnt and shattered stone, the debris from repeated cycles of heating stones in a fire and dropping them into a water-filled trough to bring it to the boil. What makes this particular example quietly melancholy is that it was levelled around 1982, most likely during agricultural improvement works, leaving only the faint outline of the mound as evidence that anything was ever there.

Before it was disturbed, local information described a mound of burnt material with an opening facing north, a configuration consistent with the classic fulacht fia form. The mound measured roughly 7.7 metres north to south and 7.6 metres east to west, making it a fairly typical size for such a site. Water, essential to the function of these monuments, was once close at hand in the form of a nearby spring, though that too has since been drained. Approximately 80 metres to the north-west lies a second possible fulacht fia, suggesting this area may once have seen repeated or prolonged prehistoric activity rather than a single isolated episode of use. The clustering of these sites is not unusual in Cork, which has one of the densest concentrations of fulachtaí fia anywhere in the country, though the reasons why any particular location attracted repeated use remain a matter of ongoing discussion among archaeologists.
