Fulacht fia, Lack, Co. Mayo

In a field near the townland of Lack in County Mayo, there is a low, horseshoe-shaped mound that most people would walk past without a second glance.

It is a fulacht fia, a type of ancient cooking site found in enormous numbers across Ireland, and one of the more quietly remarkable categories of monument in the Irish landscape. The characteristic form, a burnt mound of heat-shattered stone and charcoal-blackened earth curving around a central hollow, is the physical residue of a simple but effective technology: stones were heated in a fire and then dropped into a water-filled trough, bringing the water to a boil and holding it there long enough to cook meat or, as some researchers have argued, to process hides or brew ale. The majority of fulachta fia date to the Bronze Age, roughly 1800 to 800 BC, though some examples fall outside that range.

They are extraordinarily common. Estimates suggest there are more than five thousand recorded examples in Ireland, clustering particularly in low-lying, waterlogged ground where a reliable water source was close at hand. That abundance is part of what makes them interesting: whatever activity they served, it was repeated so frequently and so widely across prehistoric Ireland that these modest mounds became one of the most consistent features of the ancient Irish countryside. The example at Lack sits within that broader pattern, a local instance of something that was once, apparently, entirely ordinary.
