Fulacht fia, Loumanagh, Co. Cork

Sitting in a field in Loumanagh, a low, irregular mound of burnt and cracked stone is easy to mistake for a natural rise in the ground.

It measures roughly eighteen metres by fifteen metres and rises just over half a metre, modest enough that cattle grazing around it would barely register its presence. Yet this unassuming hump is a fulacht fia, one of the most common prehistoric monument types in Ireland, and one that points to a surprisingly organised approach to cooking or industrial processing that was practised across the country for thousands of years. A fulacht fia typically consists of a horseshoe-shaped mound of fire-shattered stone surrounding a trough, the debris accumulating over repeated cycles of heating stones in a fire and dropping them into water to bring it rapidly to the boil. The mound at Loumanagh has a possible opening about four and a half metres wide facing east, which may correspond to the original trough entrance.

The site is one of three fulachta fiadh recorded in this area of North Cork on land that, in the early twentieth century, belonged to a farmer named James O'Connell. All three were noted by a researcher named Bowman in 1934, making this one of the earlier documented clusters of the monument type in the region. The proximity of a possible ringfort roughly twenty-five metres to the west adds another layer of interest; ringforts are enclosed farmsteads dating broadly from the early medieval period, and their occasional association with fulachta fiadh raises questions about whether some of these cooking sites remained in use, or at least in local memory, long after their original prehistoric context had passed.
