These are Bronze Age cooking sites, typically found near water, where stones were heated in a fire and then dropped into a trough filled with water to bring it to the boil. The process left behind a characteristic horseshoe-shaped mound of shattered, fire-cracked stone, and it is this accumulated debris, sometimes built up over generations of repeated use, that survives in the ground today. Ireland has thousands of them, more than any other country in Europe, yet each one represents a real episode of communal activity, a place where people gathered, worked, and ate, somewhere between three and four thousand years ago.

Beyond its classification and its location in Park, the detailed history of this particular site remains largely unrecorded in publicly available sources. What can be said is that fulachtaí fia, as a class of monument, were in use roughly from the Early Bronze Age through to the Late Bronze Age, with some evidence of use continuing into the Iron Age. They are almost always found close to streams, springs, or boggy ground, which provided both the water for the trough and the soft, wet conditions that helped preserve the organic material, including the wooden troughs themselves, that occasionally survives. The name, loosely translated, refers to the cooking place of the Fianna or of wild deer, though the term is a medieval literary invention applied retrospectively to sites whose true purpose was only understood through modern excavation and experiment.
