Hut site, Killoe, Co. Kerry

On the lower south-eastern slopes of Bentee, a small mountain on the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, a rectangular hut sits quietly against the south face of a large natural rock outcrop.

Whoever built it was thinking practically: the outcrop forms a ready-made wall, and the structure around it is drystone, meaning the stones are stacked and fitted without mortar, relying entirely on the weight and careful placement of the material to hold together. The hut measures roughly four metres by just under three, with walls still standing to about seventy centimetres high and eighty centimetres thick. What makes the interior particularly interesting is a series of upright slabs lining the inner wall-face, giving the space a more deliberate, almost fitted quality. A possible entrance opens to the east.

The most unusual feature is tucked into the north-east corner: a small separate chamber, built with one corbelled wall, where stones are laid so that each course projects slightly inward over the one below, and roofed with sloping slabs. The archaeologists who surveyed it suggested this corner chamber may have served as an animal shelter. That detail shifts the reading of the whole structure. Rather than a dwelling alone, the hut could represent the kind of seasonal or upland working arrangement common across Kerry's mountain terrain, where people and their animals shared close quarters during grazing seasons on higher ground. The site is recorded and described in A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan's archaeological survey of the Iveragh Peninsula, published by Cork University Press in 1996.
