Megalithic tomb – wedge tomb, Largynagreana, Co. Donegal

Tucked into a patch of rough pasture about a kilometre northwest of Killybegs Harbour, the Largynagreana wedge tomb offers sweeping views across Donegal Bay to the south, though low hills block the vista in other directions.

This ancient monument, dating back thousands of years to the Neolithic period, sits beside an old, disused trackway that may have disturbed the tomb’s western end during its construction, according to local accounts from the 1930s.

The tomb follows the classic wedge design, stretching 4.5 metres in length and oriented from west-southwest to east-northeast. It’s divided into two distinct sections: a small entrance portico at the western end and a main burial chamber that narrows as it extends eastward. The structure retains much of its original form, including a substantial roofstone that covers most of the main chamber, and an outer wall stone that helps contain the grass-covered cairn material surrounding the monument. The cairn itself spreads about 3 metres wide near the tomb’s entrance and rises to nearly a metre in height.

The portico entrance, open to the west, measures just under a metre long and features two standing stones forming its sides, with what appears to be a displaced septal stone leaning against them. The main chamber beyond contains six visible sidestones, three on each side, supporting the massive roofstone that measures at least 3 metres long and 2 metres wide. Historical records from Thomas Fagan’s 1847 visit suggest the monument hasn’t changed significantly since then, though locals remembered slabs being removed from the site even in those days. Today, this protected national monument stands as one of County Donegal’s numerous megalithic tombs, offering visitors a tangible connection to Ireland’s prehistoric past.
