Mill, Ogúil, Co. Galway

Along the Lough Kip River in west Galway, roughly 650 metres upstream from where the water spills into Ballyquirke Lough, a small mill once stood on the northern bank.

What makes it quietly interesting is not its size or survival, but its type. It was recorded as a muileann ton, the Irish term for a horizontal-wheeled mill, sometimes called a click mill or Norse mill, in which a horizontal wheel set directly beneath the millstone was turned by a jet of water channelled through a narrow race. This design, simple and requiring no gearing, was once common across Ireland and the Scottish islands, and it persisted in remote areas long after vertical-wheel technology had become standard elsewhere.

The earliest cartographic evidence for the building comes from the first edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, which shows a small rectangular structure sitting at the river's edge. By the time of the 1947 revision, it had been removed from the map entirely, suggesting the mill had fallen out of use and probably out of existence well before that point. A. T. Lucas, writing in 1953, noted that the mill had been operational until around 1905, which gives a rough closing date for what would have been a working piece of vernacular milling tradition surviving unusually late into the twentieth century.

No formal inspection of the site appears to have taken place, and it is unclear whether any physical trace remains on the ground today. The location, a riverbank between two loughs in the Connemara landscape, is the kind of place where a low stone foundation might persist unremarked for generations, or might equally have been swallowed by vegetation and water-level change. For anyone moving through that stretch of the Lough Kip River, it is worth knowing the approximate position and keeping an eye on the northern bank.
