The moated site at Aughall More once stood on the flat floodplains beside the River Suir in North Tipperary, its location chosen to take advantage of the naturally low-lying terrain.

Historical maps from the Ordnance Survey show it as a distinctive diamond-shaped enclosure, complete with a single defensive bank and an outer fosse, or ditch, that would have provided protection for its medieval inhabitants. These earthwork features were typical of moated sites built across Ireland during the Anglo-Norman period, serving as fortified homesteads for settlers and local lords.

Unfortunately, this piece of medieval heritage was destroyed in the late 1960s, leaving only historical records and archaeological surveys to tell its story. The site’s proximity to the River Suir, which flows immediately to the north, would have been both a strategic advantage and a practical consideration for its builders; the river provided water, transport links, and additional natural defence. The diamond-shaped layout, rather unusual compared to the more common rectangular or square moated sites, suggests this may have been adapted to fit the specific contours of the floodplain or perhaps reflected the particular preferences of its builders.

Today, nothing visible remains of this once-fortified settlement, but its documentation in sources like ‘The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary’ compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O’Brien ensures its place in the historical record. The site represents one of many lost medieval landscapes across Ireland, where modern development and agricultural changes have erased physical traces of the past, leaving archaeologists and historians to piece together these stories from maps, written records, and field surveys conducted before their destruction.
