In the southeast foothills of Reheennahoon Hill in County Wexford lies a curious rectangular earthwork that has puzzled and intrigued historians for generations.

Moated site, Raheennahoon, Co. Wexford

This moated site, first recorded on the 1839 Ordnance Survey map, consists of a grass-covered rectangular area measuring approximately 32 metres east to west and 30 metres north to south. The enclosure is defined by the remnants of backfilled moats on its northern and eastern sides, now appearing as slight depressions about 14 to 16 metres wide and only 0.2 metres deep, whilst field banks mark its southern and western boundaries.

The site represents a type of medieval settlement commonly found across Ireland, particularly in the eastern counties. These moated sites, dating primarily from the 13th and 14th centuries, were typically constructed by Anglo-Norman colonists or wealthy Gaelic families as defended farmsteads. The moats, which would have originally been much deeper and possibly water-filled given the low-lying landscape, served both defensive and status purposes; they protected the inhabitants and their livestock whilst simultaneously displaying the owner’s wealth and importance in the local community.

Today, the Raheennahoon moated site stands as a subtle but significant reminder of medieval life in County Wexford. Though the moats have been largely filled in over the centuries and the internal structures have long since vanished, the site’s footprint remains clearly visible in the landscape. Its inclusion in the Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford ensures its protection and recognition as an important piece of Ireland’s medieval heritage, offering visitors a chance to stand where a prosperous medieval household once conducted their daily lives amidst the rolling hills of southeast Ireland.
