O’Carrolls Castle, Ballyknockan, Co. Offaly

Tucked into a natural hollow in the upland countryside of County Offaly, the ruins of O'Carroll's Castle at Ballyknockan tell the story of 17th-century fortified living.

What remains today is a substantial bawn, or defensive courtyard, that once protected a tower house in its northeastern corner, though the tower itself has been reduced to little more than a pile of rubble. The surviving walls reveal a rectangular enclosure measuring approximately 56 metres north to south and 61 metres east to west, with walls nearly a metre thick; a formidable barrier in its day.

The most striking features are the two circular angle towers that still guard the southwestern and northwestern corners of the bawn. These towers, with their 2.85-metre internal diameter, originally stood two storeys high and were accessed externally from the courtyard at each level, much like those at the similar Kilcolgan castle nearby. Gun loops pierce both the towers and the bawn walls, reminders of the violent times that necessitated such defences. Visitors would have entered through a grand segmental arch at the centre of the southern wall, finding themselves on a three-metre-wide stone avenue that divided the space neatly in two; the tower house occupied the eastern half whilst domestic quarters filled the western side.

Archaeological evidence suggests the complex included a small square house bonded to the northern end of the western wall, likely built at the same time as the main fortifications. Later outhouses were added along the northern wall, and modern farm sheds now abut the eastern side. Despite archaeological monitoring during nearby construction work in 2003, no additional artefacts have been discovered to shed more light on daily life within these walls. The castle’s design, particularly its circular flanking towers and external tower access, bears remarkable similarity to Kilcolgan castle in North Offaly, suggesting both were products of the same architectural traditions that shaped Irish defensive structures during this turbulent period.
