Ringfort (Cashel), Craggs, Co. Limerick

On a low rise in County Limerick, a roughly circular patch of ground tells a story that requires some patience to read.

What was once a cashel, the Irish term for a ringfort built from dry-stone walling rather than earthen banks, has subsided into the landscape so thoroughly that large sections of its boundary are barely distinguishable from the surrounding field. Yet enough survives to make the structure legible, and the dimensions recorded here, around 20 metres north to south and 18 metres east to west, place it comfortably within the range of the small defended farmsteads that once dotted early medieval Ireland in their thousands.

Ringforts, whether built from stone or earth, were the standard unit of rural settlement in Ireland from roughly the sixth to the twelfth century, typically enclosing a family's dwelling, outbuildings, and livestock. This particular example at Craggs was recorded by Denis Power and uploaded to the national record in August 2011. The surviving wall still stands to an internal height of 1.7 metres in places, dropping to 1.4 metres on the exterior face, with a top width of around 1.2 metres. On the north-western to north-eastern arc, an external fosse, essentially a shallow ditch dug to reinforce the defensible character of the enclosure, remains visible, measuring roughly 0.6 metres deep with a base width of one metre. The north-eastern to south-eastern stretch of walling has collapsed almost entirely, leaving that quadrant difficult to trace.

The site sits atop a gentle rise in terrain that slopes away to the east, a positioning typical of these enclosures, which favoured elevated ground for both drainage and visibility. The interior is overgrown and scattered with loose stones dislodged from the collapsed wall, and slopes gradually toward the south. Anyone approaching should expect to work through vegetation to get a clear sense of the perimeter, and the north-western arc, where the fosse is best preserved, rewards the closest attention. The site is not formally managed or signposted, so access depends on local conditions and landowner permission, as is standard for field monuments of this kind across rural Limerick.
