Ringfort, Oughtagh, Co. Galway

In a field in Oughtagh, in the north of County Galway, there is something that is almost nothing.

A subcircular enclosure, roughly twenty metres by fifteen, sits immediately to the east of a ringfort, and the only evidence of its existence is a faint band of different vegetation along its southern edges. No bank, no ditch, no stonework breaks the surface. The shape is gone, absorbed back into the ground.

The enclosure was recorded on the first edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, produced in Ireland during the 1830s, which means that at the time of the survey there was still enough visible on the ground to be worth marking. Ringforts, which are the most common monument type in the Irish countryside, are broadly understood as enclosed farmsteads dating from the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries. Many were surrounded by subsidiary enclosures used for penning livestock or separating different domestic activities, and the small enclosure at Oughtagh, positioned directly beside its companion ringfort, fits that general pattern. Whether the two features were in use at the same time is the kind of question that only excavation could answer, and none appears to have taken place here.

What makes the Oughtagh enclosure quietly interesting is precisely its near-total disappearance. The vegetation anomaly at the south-east and south-west, where the buried boundary still influences what grows above it, is the kind of trace that aerial photography or careful fieldwork in the right season can sometimes pick out. Below the soil, the original cut or bank may be largely intact, invisible but present, which is true of a great many Irish monuments that look, to the casual eye, like ordinary farmland.
