Ringfort (Rath), Brisla, Co. Clare

In the townland of Brisla, County Clare, a rath sits in the landscape doing what raths have done for well over a thousand years: quietly persisting.

A rath is a ringfort, the most common type of early medieval monument in Ireland, typically a circular area enclosed by one or more earthen banks and ditches. Farmers built them as defended homesteads, and they were in use roughly from the sixth to the twelfth centuries. There are tens of thousands recorded across the country, yet each one occupied by a real family, a real household, in a particular patch of ground.

Clare is dense with such sites. The county's geology, a mix of fertile lowland and exposed limestone upland, made it well suited to the kind of mixed farming economy that ringforts served. Brisla, like many Clare townlands, carries its history in its very ground, and the presence of a rath here points to early medieval settlement in what might otherwise seem an unremarkable corner of the county. The classification as a rath, rather than a cashel, the stone-built equivalent common in the Burren, suggests earthwork construction, which in turn suggests this site sits on workable soil rather than bare karst.

The source material for this particular site is sparse, and inventing details about its current condition, dimensions, or ownership would do the place a disservice. What can be said is that ringforts in agricultural townlands are frequently tucked into field corners, their banks softened by centuries of grazing and ploughing, sometimes marked only by a slight rise and a tradition among local farmers of leaving them well alone. That tradition is not mere superstition; raths have long been associated in Irish folklore with the otherworld, and many survive simply because no one wanted the trouble of disturbing them.
