Somebody, at some point during the life of the Dalgin estate, looked at an ancient enclosed farmstead and decided it would make a pleasant feature in a designed landscape. The result is an early medieval rath, a roughly circular earthen enclosure once used as a defended farmstead or settlement, that now reads partly as a piece of deliberate parkland scenery, its inner scarp lined with trees in a way that suggests conscious planting rather than accidental colonisation.

The rath itself is nearly circular, measuring thirty-three metres north to south and thirty-two metres east to west, which places it firmly within the typical size range for such enclosures across Ireland. A degraded bank survives intermittently around the perimeter, suggesting the earthwork has lost some definition over the centuries, though the scarp that defines it for most of its circuit remains legible on the ground. An entrance survives at the south-east. Raths like this one were constructed throughout the early medieval period, broadly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and would originally have enclosed a farmstead belonging to a family of some local standing. The Dalgin estate context is a reminder that these monuments did not simply sit unchanged in the landscape; landowners of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries frequently incorporated prehistoric and early medieval earthworks into their demesnes as ornamental curiosities, giving them a second life as aesthetic objects even as their original social meaning dissolved.
