Rock art (present location), Onagh, Co. Wicklow

A rounded granite boulder in Onagh, County Wicklow, carries marks that were almost certainly never meant to be found again.

Turned up during landscaping works, the stone had spent an unknown stretch of time buried in agricultural soil, with only a small portion of its surface exposed above ground. That much is clear from the plough marks scored across it, the kind left when a blade catches a buried rock repeatedly over years or generations. The boulder has since been moved to sit beside a nearby portal tomb, a megalithic monument consisting of two or more upright stones capped by a large flat stone, forming a chamber associated with Neolithic burial. The pairing of the two now feels deliberate, though it is largely circumstantial.

The boulder itself is substantial, measuring roughly 1.15 metres by 1.05 metres across and 0.65 metres thick. Carved into its surface are approximately six cup marks, the shallow, roughly circular depressions that represent one of the oldest and most enigmatic forms of prehistoric rock art found across Ireland and Britain. These are reasonably well defined despite their age, each around five to six centimetres in diameter and just one and a half centimetres deep. Additional hollows on the surface may be further cup marks worn down by weathering, while smaller indentations appear to be pock marks, possibly from the same carving tradition. The original location of the boulder, about thirty metres to the north-east of the portal tomb, raises the question of whether the two were ever meaningfully connected in the minds of the people who made them, a question the marks themselves cannot answer.
