Site of Catholic Church, Lattoon, Co. Galway

In the southern corner of an irregularly shaped graveyard in Lattoon, County Galway, a low tangle of overgrown limestone marks a site that may have served as a place of Catholic worship at a time when such things had to be conducted with considerable discretion.

The foundations that survive are modest, a rectangular outline measuring roughly 5.6 metres by 4.2 metres externally, aligned northwest to southeast, with the most legible stonework, courses of roughly laid limestone blocks rising to about 1.5 metres, preserved at the northwest end. The early Ordnance Survey six-inch map, compiled in the nineteenth century, records something slightly different on this spot: a small circular feature of about ten metres in diameter, marked with a broken line. Whether the rectangular foundations and that circular outline represent two phases of the same place, or simply a mapping approximation of an unusual shape, is not resolved.

What gives the site its particular interest is a piece of local tradition attached to an inscribed slab said to be nearby, though the slab itself has not been formally located. According to that tradition, the inscription records that a priest named P. James Finachti erected both the stone and an oratory on this spot in 1683, dedicating it in honour of St. Gobnait, described as abbess of the enclosure. St. Gobnait is a figure associated primarily with Ballyvourney in County Cork, where a significant early medieval foundation bears her name, so her commemoration in a small Galway oratory erected during the Penal era, when Catholic worship was legally suppressed and priests operated under considerable personal risk, is quietly striking. The date 1683 falls squarely within that period of restriction, which makes the act of erecting a named, inscribed stone and a dedicated oratory something more than routine piety. The graveyard within which all of this sits is itself a separate recorded site, suggesting the area carries several overlapping layers of use across centuries.
