Ringfort (Rath), Carrowcanada, Co. Mayo

On a ridge in Carrowcanada, a modern field fence cuts clean through the middle of an enclosure that was already old when the fence-posts were a thought nobody had yet had.

The rath, a type of ringfort typically built during the early medieval period as a defended farmstead, sits on the high ground of a north-east to south-west ridge, its roughly circular outline measuring around 44 metres across. What defines it now is a stony scarp, surviving best at the south-west where it still stands about 0.8 metres high, though along the western and northern arc it has worn down to little more than a low, stony rise a couple of metres wide. At the south-south-east and south-west, stones protrude along the upper edge of the scarp, possibly the remnants of a wall that once topped it.

The enclosure has been absorbed, incrementally, into the working landscape around it. Along the north-east to south-east arc, the scarp has been pressed into service as a field boundary, its ancient line now doubling as a property edge. A later east-west fence bisects the interior north of centre, and a post-and-wire boundary strikes off to the north-west from it. This division has produced two quite different halves: the southern interior is open pasture, grassed over and relatively legible, while the northern half has been taken over by hawthorn, blackthorn, and hazel, the same scrub growth that rings much of the perimeter. There is also a curious linear depression in the north-west quadrant of the interior, roughly eight metres long and half a metre deep, its purpose unrecorded. A second rath sits 280 metres to the south-east, suggesting this part of Mayo was once more densely settled than the present emptiness implies.
