Ringfort (Rath), Gortnakilla, Co. Galway

A few dozen metres from Danesfort House in the hilly pastureland of Gortnakilla, a low circular earthwork sits on a gentle rise, easily overlooked but quietly telling.

It is a rath, the most common type of early medieval enclosure in Ireland, typically built between roughly 500 and 1000 AD as a defended farmstead for a single family. The basic design, a circular area defined by one or more raised banks and ditches, was repeated tens of thousands of times across the island, each one a small self-contained world of livestock, crops, and domestic life.

This particular example measures around 33 metres in diameter and, while the essential shape survives, time and land use have softened and broken much of its structure. A rath of this kind would originally have presented a clear sequence of defensive elements working outward from the centre: an inner scarp (the steep face of an interior bank), a berm (the flat ledge between inner and outer earthworks), an outer bank or scarp, and beyond that an outer fosse, the ditch that completed the enclosure. Here, the inner scarp still traces the full circuit, but the berm is only clearly readable at the south-east. Slight traces of what may be an outer bank survive at the south-east as well, while elsewhere the outer element has been reduced to a simple scarp. The outer fosse is almost gone, with only faint traces remaining at the north-north-west. A row of beech trees has taken root along the outer scarp face, running from the south around through the west to the north, and their presence both marks and slightly obscures the line of the original earthwork.
