Site of Castle, Castlemarket, Co. Kilkenny

On the south bank of the Ouveg River in Castlemarket, County Kilkenny, lies the remnants of what was once a notable medieval fortification.

The site appears as an oval earthwork, measuring approximately 27 metres northwest to southeast and 18 metres northeast to southwest. Whilst nothing remains visible at ground level today, the first Ordnance Survey map from 1839 carefully recorded its location, marking it with ‘Site of Castle’ in distinctive Gothic script.

Historical records paint a picture of a more substantial structure that once dominated this riverside location. According to the historian Carrigan, writing in 1905, the castle stood beside a high moat in a field known locally as ‘the Kruckawn’ or simply ‘Old Castle’, positioned close to Castlemarket bridge. The fortification had strong aristocratic connections, having belonged to the Earls of Ormond, one of Ireland’s most powerful noble families during the medieval and early modern periods.

The castle’s demise came around 1800 when both the structure and its adjoining moat were destroyed, leaving only the earthwork traces that cartographers and archaeologists have since documented. Today, visitors to the area would find it difficult to discern any obvious signs of the castle’s former presence without prior knowledge of its location; however, the site remains an important part of Kilkenny’s medieval landscape and the broader history of Anglo-Norman settlement along the River Ouveg.
