These sites, known in Irish as cillíní (singular cillín), were used for centuries to inter unbaptised infants and others who, under Catholic practice, were excluded from burial in consecrated ground. They occupy a distinctive and often melancholy place in the Irish landscape, frequently sited at townland boundaries, ancient earthworks, or old ecclesiastical enclosures, their locations chosen with quiet deliberateness rather than official sanction.
