Enclosure, Com, Co. Kilkenny

In the townland of Com in County Kilkenny, an enclosure sits in the landscape, recorded and classified but almost entirely undescribed in the public record.

Enclosures of this kind are among the most common archaeological features in Ireland, yet also among the most varied: the term can cover anything from a ringfort, a circular earthen bank that once enclosed a homestead in the early medieval period, to a later field boundary of uncertain date, to something altogether harder to categorise. What exactly the Com enclosure is, how large it sits, whether its banks survive clearly or have been reduced by centuries of agriculture, remains for now a matter of the site itself rather than any accessible written account.
