Enclosure, Coolattin, Co. Wicklow

In the forested hillside at Coolattin in County Wicklow, a circular enclosure roughly 35 metres across either survives or has vanished entirely beneath the trees.

Nobody is quite sure which. Despite being recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1838, this feature has never been physically located on the ground, leaving it in a peculiar category of archaeological sites: known to have been observed at some point, plotted onto a map with reasonable precision, and then effectively lost.

The 1838 OS six-inch maps were among the most ambitious cartographic undertakings of nineteenth-century Ireland, and the surveyors who produced them did occasionally mark earthworks, enclosures, and other features they encountered in the field. The hachuring used to indicate this particular enclosure, a technique of short radiating lines used on early maps to suggest the shape and slope of an earthwork, implies that whoever noted it down saw something substantial enough to record deliberately. Circular enclosures of this general type are common across Ireland and can date from the Iron Age through to the early medieval period; they served various purposes, from settlement and farming to ritual use. This one sits on a steep east-facing slope, now covered in forestry, which makes any ground-level survey considerably more difficult. Whether the earthwork was already eroding in 1838, or has simply been obscured by decades of forestry planting and management, is unknown.

The site is not accessible in any practical sense, and without confirmed ground coordinates there is little to seek out even for the determined visitor. Its interest lies less in what can be seen and more in what the situation reveals: that the archaeological map of Ireland contains gaps and question marks, places that exist as entries and coordinates but resist being found.
