Enclosure, Killinure, Co. Wicklow

At the edge of a strip of woodland in Killinure, County Wicklow, a near-perfect circle of earth and stone sits quietly beside a roadway, neither obviously signposted nor especially dramatic in appearance.

It is the kind of feature that most people would walk past without a second thought, mistaking the low bank for a field boundary or a natural rise in the ground. Yet the geometry gives it away: a circular enclosure roughly thirty metres in diameter, carefully constructed and, in places, still remarkably intact.

The enclosure is defined by an earth and stone bank that survives best along its eastern and southern arcs, where it reaches between two and two and a half metres in width and up to a metre in height. At the north-east, the entrance, two metres wide, is framed by bank terminals faced with boulders, a detail that suggests deliberate construction rather than casual accumulation. Enclosures of this general type are found across Ireland, and while they are commonly associated with early medieval settlement, typically serving as a ringfort, a farmstead enclosed for protection or status, the absence here of any detectable fosse (the external ditch that usually accompanies such earthworks) and the lack of visible internal features make it difficult to assign a confident function or date. It may have served as a livestock enclosure, a settlement boundary, or something else entirely; the archaeology simply does not say.

The site sits on level ground, partly sheltered by the woodland along the road's southern edge. The eastern and southern sections of the bank are the most legible, and the boulder-faced entrance terminals at the north-east are the detail most worth looking for once you have located the line of the earthwork itself.
