Megalithic tomb – portal tomb, Ballyannan, Co. Donegal

On the southern face of Aghaweel Hill on the Inishowen peninsula, just over a kilometre from the shores of Lough Swilly, stands a modest yet intriguing portal tomb.

This ancient monument sits on a small spur of grass-covered rock outcrop, with the rising hillslope behind it blocking views to the north. Look southward, however, and you’ll be rewarded with sweeping vistas across the southern half of Inishowen and westward over Lough Swilly to the mountains of the Fanad peninsula. The surrounding landscape provides rough grazing today, whilst the valley of the Aghaweel River, about 500 metres to the south and southeast, still sees active cultivation.

The tomb itself consists of a roofless stone chamber measuring 2.2 metres long, narrowing from 1.5 metres wide at its front entrance to 1.3 metres at the back. Two portal stones, standing just under a metre apart, frame the entrance alongside a distinctive gabled doorstone that reaches about two-thirds of their height. The eastern portal stone stands 1.25 metres tall whilst its western counterpart reaches 1.3 metres, though both show signs of possible damage to their tops and may have originally been taller. Single upright stones form the east and west walls of the chamber, with another stone set between their southern ends creating the back wall. The entire structure sits towards the northern end of a low, roughly circular mound measuring about 10.5 metres north to south and 9 metres east to west.

Historical records suggest this monument has remained in its current roofless state since at least the mid-19th century, when it was documented in an Ordnance Survey Revision Name Book from 1846-7. The tomb faces uphill towards the north, an unusual orientation that adds to its distinctive character amongst Ireland’s megalithic monuments. A small upright stone positioned outside the southeast corner appears to be a deliberate feature, possibly serving as a packing stone to help stabilise the structure. Despite centuries of exposure to the Atlantic weather sweeping in from Lough Swilly, these ancient stones continue to mark this hillside spot where our ancestors once laid their dead to rest.
