Hidden in a natural hollow in the low-lying Wexford countryside, the moated site at Glentire offers a glimpse into medieval Ireland's defensive landscape.

This rectangular earthwork measures 29 metres from north to south and 27 metres from east to west, surrounded by substantial earthen banks that rise between 3 and 7 metres wide. The interior height of these banks varies from 0.3 to 1 metre, creating a formidable barrier that would have protected whatever structures once stood within.

The site’s most striking feature is its water-filled moat system, which encircles three sides of the enclosure; the western side notably lacks this defensive element. These flat-bottomed moats are impressive in scale, spanning 7 to 9 metres in width. The internal depth reaches 1.5 metres whilst the external depth measures 0.6 metres, suggesting careful engineering to maintain water levels and maximise defensive capability. Today, nature has reclaimed much of the site, with overgrowth obscuring some of the earthwork’s original sharp edges and geometric precision.

First documented by Barry in 1977 and later included in the Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford published in 1996, this moated site represents a type of fortified settlement particularly common in Anglo-Norman Ireland. These sites typically date from the 13th to 14th centuries and were often associated with agricultural estates or minor lordships. The absence of a moat on the western side might indicate the presence of additional structures or natural defences that have since disappeared, or perhaps a deliberate design choice based on the local topography.
