A rath is the Irish term for a ringfort, a type of enclosed farmstead built predominantly during the early medieval period, typically between the fifth and twelfth centuries. They were the homes of farming families, their banks and ditches serving less as military defences than as enclosures for livestock and markers of social standing. This one is defined by a bank and an external fosse, the fosse being the ditch dug just outside the bank, and both survive in fair condition, though the bank has been interrupted on the north-north-east to east-north-east arc and again on the west-south-west to west side.

The fosse is better preserved, running continuously from the east-north-east around through the south and back up to the north. At the south-east, there is a causewayed entrance gap some seven metres wide, where a raised crossing over the fosse would have allowed access into the interior; this entrance has been modified at some point since the monument was first recorded. What gives the site an additional layer of administrative strangeness is that the townland boundary, the old territorial division that predates modern land ownership, cuts directly through the monument at both its eastern and western edges, meaning the ringfort technically straddles two separate townlands. References to the site appear in sources from 1914 and again in 1952, suggesting it has been known to local historians and surveyors for at least a century.
