Ringfort (Rath), Frenchfort, Co. Galway

In the level grassland of Frenchfort, a man quarrying for building stone once uncovered a skeleton reported to be seven feet long, roughly 2.1 metres, inside the low earthen ring of an ancient enclosure.

The detail was recorded by Lynch Athy in 1913 to 1914, and later cited by McCaffrey in 1952. Whether the measurement was accurate or enlarged in the telling, it attached a small mythology to what is otherwise an unremarkable patch of ground.

The enclosure is a rath, a type of circular ringfort built from earth and stone that served as a farmstead enclosure during the early medieval period in Ireland, typically between the fifth and twelfth centuries. This particular example measures roughly 42.8 metres in diameter, a middling size by Irish standards. It is poorly preserved; the defining bank survives only partially, with no visible surface trace remaining along the southern to south-eastern arc. The gaps on the northern and south-western sides appear to be of modern origin rather than original entrances, suggesting the earthwork has been interfered with over time, likely by the kind of stone quarrying that produced the skeletal discovery in the first place.

Visitors should expect very little to announce itself. The surviving bank is subtle at best, and the southern section has effectively disappeared into the surrounding grassland. What makes the site worth a moment's attention is less what can be seen and more what that quarrying episode suggests: that the rath was already being treated as a convenient source of loose stone by the early twentieth century, a fate common enough to have diminished ringforts across the country. The towering skeleton may be folklore, exaggeration, or entirely accurate, but it is a reminder that these quiet, half-eroded circles were not always empty.
