Ringfort (Rath), Liscahane, Co. Cork

Three concentric earthen rings sit on a gentle west-facing slope above the Finnow River valley in mid-Cork, and what makes this rath quietly remarkable is not its scale but its stubbornness.

Despite centuries of erosion, two of the three banks survive all the way around the circular enclosure, which measures 26 metres across in both directions. The third, outermost bank has fared less well, surviving only along the northern and eastern arc before giving way to a scarp on the south-western and western sides. A low-walled farmland fence now runs along the top of the second bank to the north-west, a practical intrusion that says something about how such monuments get absorbed, gradually, into the working landscape.

Raths, the earthen equivalent of the more romantically named ringfort, were the everyday enclosures of early medieval Ireland, typically surrounding a family's dwelling, livestock, and outbuildings. Most date to somewhere between the sixth and tenth centuries, though the type persisted longer in some regions. What distinguishes the Liscahane example is the trivariate arrangement: three banks separated by intervening fosses, or ditches, which would have made the enclosure considerably more defensible, or at least more imposing, than the single-banked variety that accounts for the majority of surviving raths. A poorly defined entrance, roughly 3.5 metres wide, passes through each bank on the south-western side, aligning them in sequence. Beneath the interior, which slopes gently downward to the west, there is a possible souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage or chamber of the kind commonly associated with storage and, in times of trouble, concealment.

The interior and the banks themselves are now planted with coniferous trees, which both preserves the earthworks from agricultural disturbance and makes the monument harder to read as a whole. The sharp drop to the Finnow valley floor just below the site suggests the position was chosen with some care, commanding a view over the river corridor even as the enclosure itself remains set back from the edge.
