Castle Features
Talbotstown Fort stands on level ground amid the gently rolling landscape of County Wicklow, a remarkably well-preserved example of medieval military engineering.
This trapezoidal moated enclosure measures approximately 50 metres east to west and 46 metres north to south, surrounded by substantial earthen and stone banks that rise up to a metre high on the interior side. The defensive walls feature an internal stone facing reaching 0.8 metres in height, whilst the exterior presents a slightly angled stone face that slopes down to meet the fosse below.
The fosse itself, essentially a dry moat, runs around the perimeter at an impressive width of about 8 metres and plunges to depths of 2 to 2.5 metres with steep sides and a flat bottom; a formidable obstacle for any would-be attackers. Access to the fort was controlled through a single entrance on the eastern side, where a 5-metre-wide causeway crosses the fosse through a 6-metre gap in the defensive banks. Three small defensive towers still stand, with the best-preserved example occupying the northwest corner, projecting slightly beyond the main wall line by about a metre. Another tower marks the midpoint of the western wall, whilst a third stands towards the eastern end of the northern wall, with evidence suggesting a possible fourth tower once stood at the northeast corner, complete with internal stone steps for access.
Though no visible internal features remain today to hint at the daily life within these walls, the fort's strategic design and robust construction speak to its importance in medieval Wicklow. The site has been recognised as nationally significant since 1940, when it was placed under a preservation order, ensuring this impressive fortification continues to tell its story to future generations. The Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow, published in 1997, provides the foundation for our understanding of this monument, though ongoing research continues to reveal new insights into its history and purpose.
