Ringfort (Rath), Castlelohort Demesne, Co. Cork

Just north of the avenue leading to Lohort Castle in County Cork, a near-perfect circle of raised earth sits quietly in pasture, its outline softened by generations of deciduous growth.

This is a rath, the most common type of ringfort found across Ireland, a form of enclosed farmstead typically dating from the early medieval period, roughly 500 to 1000 AD. What makes this one quietly arresting is the precision of its survival: the enclosing bank still reads clearly on the ground, and the external fosse, a defensive ditch cut around the outside, remains traceable for most of its circuit.

The enclosure measures approximately 47 metres north to south and 46 metres east to west, making it a fairly typical example in terms of scale. The earthen bank stands around 0.6 metres above the interior ground level and rises to about 1.2 metres when measured from the base of the external fosse. That fosse, which runs around most of the perimeter, is notably absent to the south-east, a gap that may reflect an original entrance or simply differential survival. The ditch is at its deepest to the north-west and becomes shallow and waterlogged toward the north-east, where the gentle north-facing slope likely encourages water to collect. The enclosure sits on land that forms part of the Castlelohort Demesne, the estate associated with Lohort Castle, a tower house with its own long history nearby. The rath almost certainly predates any of the castle's fabric by many centuries, an older presence absorbed into the landscape of a much later estate.
