Standing stone, Ardnamoghill, Co. Donegal

On a low hill near Ardnamoghill in County Donegal stands a solitary stone monument that has watched over the landscape for millennia.

This ancient standing stone rises 2.5 metres from the ground, its base measuring just over a metre square before tapering gracefully towards its weathered summit. The stone is oriented northwest to southeast, a positioning that may have held significance for those who erected it thousands of years ago.

The monument sits on level ground near the hilltop, offering commanding views of the surrounding countryside. Like many standing stones across Ireland, its original purpose remains enigmatic; it may have served as a territorial marker, formed part of a ritual landscape, or acted as an astronomical alignment point. The isolation of this particular stone, with no obvious associated features nearby, adds to its mystery.

This standing stone forms part of Donegal's rich archaeological heritage, documented in the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983. The survey catalogued field antiquities spanning from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century, providing invaluable records of monuments like this one that continue to punctuate the Irish landscape, silent witnesses to the beliefs and practices of our prehistoric ancestors.
